Sonos and qobuz9/17/2023 ![]() ![]() The My Daily Discovery Mixes have been great for me. In the end MQA does sound pretty good and even if lossy its only lossy in the above 16-bit resolution and the only thing that really get real quality loss is above-Nyquist frequencies which cannot really be heard anyways. With MQA they can claim to be on par with 96KHz or even 192KHz. ![]() It would be simples if Tidal just streamed 24-bit 44.1/48KHz format rather than all this MQA nonsense but I also understand that should Tidal stream 24-bit/48KHz then a lot of people would not even consider it "high resolution audio" because of how much smaller number like 48KHz is compared to 96 or 192KHz. ![]() Usually noise floor of recording is higher than what 24-bit can encode so its possible to squeeze higher than Nyquist frequencies without too much of a sacrifice. Lossy nature of MQA only means its not quite full 24-bit/96KHz (let alone 192KHz) because 8 least significant bits of the stream contain not only least significant bits but also higher frequencies and meta-data. Second unfold is just applying fancy filters when resampling from 96KHz to 192KHz - hardly 'must have' feature, especially given above-Nyuquist information are heavily compressed anyways so its like trying to polish very rough surface using very fine sandpaper and claiming its perfectly flat. ![]()
